“I have to tell you something.” I blurt out in a rush. He turns around right as he grabs a bottle of red. He’s looking at me, waiting for me to continue. I take a deep breath and let it out. “I saw Toby kissing that man at the counter when we met for lunch this past week.”

His brows furrow, and his expression turns to confusion. “Yeah, that’s Owen. His boyfriend.”

I brace myself for his anger and pain to rush out, but I’m momentarily stunned into silence. I open and close my mouth several times before I finally manage to say, “His what?”

“Boyfriend.” Trent drags the word out like he’s confused why I’m confused. “Owen just got into town that morning. I’m shocked they didn’t run home and immediately jump into bed. They hadn’t seen each other in over two weeks.”

“Hold on.” I lift my hand, causing Trent to freeze mid-turn on the wine key. He raises his brow and looks at me, waiting for me to continue. “I’m so confused. I thought Toby was your boyfriend.”

Trent’s face drops, all humor and confusion replaced with shock. He pushes the wine bottle aside and steps closer to me, pinning me against the island counter with his arms on either side of me. 

“You think I’m gay?” His voice is low and rough. 

My jaw drops and my eyes widen at his closeness and the gravely sound of his words. “I … Well … At the club Toby kept hugging and kissing you on the cheek. You two seemed very intimate. I … I just assumed …”

His eyes darken. He lifts his finger and runs it along my jawline, his eyes tracking the movement before they snap to mine. I swallow hard, and my breathing increases. I feel my chest rise and brush against his as I struggle to calm down because that is not how a gay man would touch me. 

“I’m not gay, babe. I am very much into women. Toby is my older brother. He just moved back to the city after being away for ten years. We’re a very affectionate family.”
